What Did Jesus Mean by “Do Not Give Dogs What Is Holy” and “Do Not Throw Your Pearls Before Pigs”?

This is Jesus According to Jesus. This reflection belongs to our What Did Jesus Mean? collection. Its focus is this: What did Jesus mean when He spoke His most difficult, startling, and frequently misunderstood words? These articles examine His sayings in their immediate Gospel context, recover what His first hearers would have understood, identify…. Listen carefully and think about what Jesus says. Let’s begin.

What Did Jesus Mean by “Do Not Give Dogs What Is Holy” and “Do Not Throw Your Pearls Before Pigs”?

1. The Saying.

“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.”

Matthew 7:6

2. The Short Answer.

Jesus was not authorizing contempt for difficult people. He was commanding moral and spiritual discernment: sacred truth must be offered faithfully, but it must not be endlessly forced upon people who are determined only to mock, desecrate, or weaponize it.

3. What Jesus Said—and Why.

The saying appears in the Sermon on the Mount immediately after Jesus warns, “Do not judge,” and commands His hearers to remove the log from their own eye before addressing another person’s speck. That placement matters. Jesus forbids hypocritical condemnation, but He does not abolish discernment. His disciples must see clearly enough to help others—and clearly enough to recognize hardened hostility.

4. What His First Hearers Would Have Heard.

In Israel, what was “holy” belonged to God and was not to be treated as common. Pearls represented something precious. Dogs in the ancient street were not sentimental household pets, and pigs were ceremonially unclean. Jesus used deliberately sharp images: something consecrated and valuable is being placed before creatures that neither recognize nor respect its worth.

5. What Jesus Was Affirming, Confronting, or Demanding.

Jesus affirmed that the truth of God is precious and must be handled reverently. He confronted the false idea that love requires limitless, undiscerning exposure to abuse. He demanded wisdom: speak truth, correct humbly, and recognize when continued argument is only feeding hostility.

6. What This Saying Does Not Mean.

Jesus was not giving His followers permission to label whole classes of people as animals or to withhold the gospel from sinners. He Himself welcomed outsiders, answered honest questions, and pursued the lost. The warning concerns a settled posture of contempt—not ignorance, confusion, doubt, or moral failure.

7. What This Means for Us Now.

Disciples should be patient without becoming naive. We should explain, answer, and bear witness, but we are not required to remain trapped in endless quarrels with people who only want to ridicule what is sacred. Sometimes faithfulness means speaking. Sometimes it means refusing to let holy things become entertainment for scorn.

8. For Further Reflection.

  • Do you confuse discernment with judgment—or tolerance with wisdom?
  • Is there a conversation in which faithfulness now requires silence, distance, or a different approach?
