Jesus warns that Jerusalem faces destruction because it has not recognized God's visit or the peace he offers.

EVANGELO DI S. LUCA 19:28-44 · DB1885
ORA, avendo dette queste cose, egli andava innanzi, salendo in Gerusalemme.

Luke 19:28–44 describes Jesus’ arrival at Jerusalem, focusing on his words and the responses around him. The sequence begins with Jesus giving clear instructions to two of his disciples: “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” The disciples follow his directions, and as expected, the owners ask, “Why are you untying the colt?” The disciples repeat Jesus’ words: “The Lord needs it.” The straightforward nature of this exchange shows how Jesus’ authority is quietly recognized. The owners do not argue, and the disciples act with confidence based on his instruction.

As Jesus rides into Jerusalem on the colt, people spread their cloaks on the road. This was a sign of honor and welcome. Near the Mount of Olives’ descent, the whole crowd of Jesus’ disciples raises their voices to praise God for all the miracles they have witnessed. Their words ring out: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” and “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” These phrases echo Scripture that celebrated God’s chosen king, and here the crowd applies them directly to Jesus. It is a scene of public acknowledgment and joy, connecting Jesus to the hope of peace and God’s glory.

Yet, this joyful praise is not welcomed by everyone. Some Pharisees are in the crowd. They are members of a Jewish religious group. They tell Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” They want the celebration silenced. Jesus answers with a strong refusal. He says, “I tell you,” “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Instead of correcting his disciples, Jesus insists the praise is not only right but inevitable. If humans were silent, creation itself would respond. This connection draws out the depth of what is happening; Jesus’ arrival carries significance so great that it cannot truly be suppressed.

Approaching the city, Jesus’ tone changes. He weeps over Jerusalem and addresses it with sorrow: “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” In these words, Jesus mourns what the city has missed: “what would bring you peace.” He explains that because they did not recognize “the time of God’s coming,” disaster will follow. Enemies will surround and destroy the city. The result is grief; peace was offered, but the city did not accept or see it.

The words in Luke 19:28–44 fit together through contrasts and connections. Jesus’ authority is quietly recognized when his disciples follow his instructions. The crowd publicly praises him as king and bringer of peace. Some religious leaders reject this praise, and Jesus himself grieves for the city’s failure to see what it needed most. The crowd’s joy and hope are answered not by celebration alone, but by warning and tears over rejection. The passage’s words together show that praise, questioning, and sorrow meet at the place where Jesus enters Jerusalem, bringing both the reality of God’s peace and the warning of its rejection.

This Listen step in the Jesus365 Journey clarifies how the words and reactions in Luke 19:28–44 are linked. Next, the Discover step examines what these connected statements reveal about Jesus himself.
